July 8, 2009 Kissing and Drooling for Kicking for Kids Who Can’t raised $310 in one afternoon of blush and bling! Jackie Herrera, a Mary Kay consultant (www.marykay.com/jackieherrera) and Adrienne Moumin of The Droolery Store (www.droolerystore.com) came to sell make up and jewelry with a portion of their proceeds benefitting Limbs for Life! The event was a huge success and another one is planned for mid-August. More details soon…stay tuned!

Facts

  • In the United States, approximately one out of 190 people are living with limb loss.

  • Every week 3,000 people lose a limb; that’s 429 a day. Forty to Forty-five percent of the individuals have problems finding funding for prosthetics.

  • There are approximately 185,000 amputee surgeries every year. More than 154,000 are new amputees.

  • Close to 90 percent of amputations result from vascular disease; the most common reasons are diabetes and trauma.

  • Near 4 percent of limb loss in children is congenital.

  • Children grow from 2 to 4 inches per year and need a minimum of two prosthetics each year.

  • Prosthetic limbs can cost anywhere between $7,000 and $85,000. Each prosthetic adjustment averages $15,000.

  • The Kicking for Kids Who Can’t raises money for the Limbs for Life Foundation, which goes to funding the purchase of prosthetic limbs for children whose families cannot afford prosthetic care themselves.

  • Ginna Goodenow created this project in 2006 while participating in a Landmark Education leadership program.

  • Kicking for Kids Who Can’t has risen close to $75,000 for the Limbs for Life Foundation.

  • The 2009 event will be held on Sunday, October 11, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the National Mall in Washington D.C.

  • Activities include kickball games, soccer ball shooting, martial arts kicking, hip-hop dancing and martial arts demonstrations, guest speakers and an award ceremony for the participating children.

  • The Kicking for Kids Who Can’t group has approximately 70 members and volunteers.

  • Sponsors for this event include the Amped Riders, the Amputee Coalition of America, Coca Cola Inc., the Colesville Presbyterian Church, College Park Industries, DC Kickball, the DC United soccer team, Department of Veterans Affairs, Disabled Sports USA, Maryland Orthotics and Prosthetics, Fleet Feet, HKS Architects, Champion Martial Arts, Performance Fitness & Tennis, Oakley Sunglasses, Proforma Promotions, Wounded Warriors and others.
